Description

INTRODUCTION History has a way of repeating itself. Gluckman and Bohannan argued about the use of local terms in accounts of other societies. Descriptions of local practices should, Bohannan argued, be sensitive to indigenous concepts. According to Bohannan ([1969] 1997), it is important to fit these practices and concepts 'into the larger conceptual system of the people who use [them]' (p. 406). By contrast, Gluckman argued that many of these concepts can 'without distortion after careful and perhaps lengthy descriptions and discussions, be given English equivalents' (1955: 380-381).
